Three Plants for Better Breathing

Three Plants for Better Breathing

Believe it or not, the indoor air that you breathe is more polluted than the outdoor air. From cleaning products and pet dander, to furniture and synthetic building materials, there are toxins coming from nearly everything, contaminating your home.

What’s a homeowner to do? The professionals at Tiger Services recommend placing these three houseplants around your home to help improve the indoor air quality.

Gerbera Daisy

Gerbera Daisy

Gerbera daisies are not only helpful, they are also beautiful and colorful. These plants aid in reducing the amount of benzene in the air. Benzene is found in dyes, detergents, and pesticides. Gerbera daisies are also effective in reducing the amount of trichloroethylene, which can be produced with dry cleaning.

Green Thumb Tip: When bringing a gerbera daisy into your home, keep in mind that they love well-drained soil and sunlight. We recommend placing them in a sunny spot, and near the laundry room if possible.

Snake Plant

Here’s a houseplant that people have a difficult time killing, even if they lack a green thumb. Snake plants also minimize the home’s level of benzene, as well as formaldehyde, (which is found in paper towels and various building materials), carbon monoxide, and xylene (a solvent used in leather).

Green Thumb Tip: Snake plants prefer dry soil in moderately bright or filtered light. They thrive in cool-to-average home temperatures.

Chrysanthemum

Chrysanthemum

This flower, also known as a mum, is another bright spot that can be added to any room. Mums are great at filtering out that pesky benzene, which is also found in paints and plastics. There are numerous types of mums, which is why we recommend choosing one that is considered a floral mum as opposed to a garden variety.

Green Thumb Tip: Mums love bright light. Placing them in direct sunlight will encourage their buds to open.
