Losing Money Part 2

Losing Money Part 2

Are you losing a growing amount of money to your energy bills and don’t know why? It could be that you’re losing your money the same way you’re losing your cool/warm air. Energy consumption increases when your San Antonio heating and cooling system overworks to compensate for loss. The good news is, Tiger Services is here to help keep that money in your wallet.

Here is the second part of our series on the four parts of your home that affect your energy conservation, and how to keep them from costing you more in the long run:

#2 Your Heating & Cooling System

Your heating and cooling system works hard to cool and heat your home year-round. Don’t make it work any harder than it has to! Regular service to keep your heating and cooling system running smoothly is key to keeping your home energy efficient. Scheduling a tune-up is quick and easy!

Do you have the best unit for your house?

If your furnace or air conditioner seem to be overworked, it could be that it isn’t the right size for your home. Improperly sized systems overtax the equipment and use more energy in trying to keep the temperature maintained. Heating and cooling professionals are able to come to your home and help you decide which size of air conditioner is best for your home.

A new component of your heating and cooling system is a big investment. Make sure when purchasing a replacement furnace or air conditioner that you consider the space the system will be heating and cooling. For example, many air conditioners have an efficiency rating, but installing the proper size is critical. Tiger Services offers a 365-day satisfaction guarantee when we install a new air conditioner.

Is the problem electrical?

The problem could be larger than your systems and appliances. Loose or corroded wires, in addition to being dangerous, affect the energy consumption of your home also. It may be necessary to perform an energy audit of your home. You can perform a simple home energy audit yourself, or we can perform one for you to help your home be as efficient as possible.

Are your ducts to blame?

Also be sure to check all ductwork leading to and from the air conditioner and furnace for leaks, as that can cause your system to overtax itself. Ducts need to be the proper size, layout or design, and should not have gaps. Ducts that are too small or improperly designed ducts make it harder for your systems to circulate air. Gaps in ductwork lead to air loss throughout the home, meaning your system may be working hard to heat empty spaces such as attics, unfinished basements, the interiors of walls, and crawl spaces.

There are also a few things you can do yourself to keep your heating and cooling systems well maintained:

Change your filters

Check your air filters for debris regularly. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends replacing your filter every month. Clean filters help your system run efficiently resulting in lower energy usage.

Set your thermostat reasonably

Make sure that your thermostat is set to a reasonable temperature. Even the best system is only expected to keep the interior of your home 20 degrees cooler than the exterior temperature. Also, make sure your system is set to the cool setting rather than the warm setting.
